DYSPORT®

A new product on the market is Dysport, a recently approved Botox competitor.  Botox, a trademark name for one of the botulinum toxins, is supplied by Allergan and was the first to obtain FDA approval in the United States.  Other subtypes of the botulinum toxin molecule exist and have uses similar to Botox.  Dysport has recently gained FDA approval to treat forehead and frown lines in the U.S. and has been used outside the country for more than 15 years.  Additional competitors to Botox and Dysport are due to be reviewed and probably approved by the FDA over the next few years.

Like Botox, Dysport is an injectable form of botulinum toxin Type A.    Some patients have reported a quicker onset of results with Dysport, sometimes within 24 hours.  Botox may take 3-5 days to work.

The cost of Dysport is less than that of Botox, but the manufacturers of both products are offering coupons and rebates.
