ABDOMINOPLASTY
Abdominoplasty is a procedure that is used to recreate the flatter,
firmer abdominal contour usually present in youth. This is done
through the removal of excessive fat and skin as well as tightening
of the abdominal muscles. Toneless, sagging abdominal skin and excessive
fat with lax muscles can be caused by pregnancy or after substantial
weight loss. The traditional abdominoplasty includes removal of
the lower abdominal skin from the level of the umbilicus ( belly
button) down to a level just above the pubic area. The abdominal
muscle are tightened and the umbilicus is reconstituted. Liposuction
is also applied as an additional procedure to produce the overall
desired effect. As every patient is an individual, every patient
will benefit from a customized approach to abdominoplasty. Depending
on the concerns and the anatomy of the patient, modifications of
the traditional abdominoplasty procedure such as a mini- abdominoplasty,
skin only abdominoplasty or an extended abdominoplasty may be appropriate.
The surgery designed to improve the abdomen does leave a scar hidden
beneath those areas usually covered by bathing suits. The position
of the scar can be customized to adapt to different clothing or
bathing suit styles. This surgery can be performed in our office-based
operating room or in the hospital. An overnight stay is sometimes
recommended. Many seek liposuction as a less invasive way to correct
problems of the abdomen. Often, however, they are directed towards
abdominoplasty due to the presence of poor skin tone and lax muscles.
